The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon

Enter the world of Paige Mahoney, a gifted clairvoyant in the year 2059. Her natural talents are considered treasonous under the current regime of Scion. Snatched away to a secret prison, she encounters another race, the Rephaim; creatures who wish to control the powers of Paige and those like her. One in particular will be assigned as her keeper, her trainer. But his motives are mysterious. To regain her freedom, Paige must learn to trust, in the prison where she is meant to die (The Bone Season #1, from Amazon).

This summary doesn't do the first book in the series justice, but it is an incredible book and such a strong start to this impressive seven book series. I bought this book with the intention of reading it as part of a book club with my friend, but he never got round to finishing it. I loved the first book, and immediately moved on to the second one without waiting for him to catch up, cause I'm not a good friend when it comes to reading books.

Paige is our main character and she is feisty and strong. An Irish immigrant, she has grown up in Scion London, a totalitarian regime that has been borne out of fear of the gifts Paige and those like her have. She is part of the underground in London, and works for a Mime Lord (a bit like a mafia boss) and she is just trying to get by. When we first meet her she is not looking for revolution, more living in fear of what is coming, not sure what to do to stop it. Scion seems untouchable for her, but as the series grows and her trust in her own abilities strengthens, she sees there are weaknesses. She begins to understand no one else is going to save her; if she wants a new world order, she needs to do it herself.

Her journey is an important part of the series, but there are lots of other characters that make this series feel full. Nick is Paige's best friend and a member of the same crew ruled by their Mime Lord, Jaxon. Whereas Nick is intelligent and caring, Jaxon is cunning to the point of cutthroat. Eliza is another member of the Seven Seals, and she is caring but a little broken and she is an interesting, layered character in herself. Warden is another pivotal character for the series; he is part of the Rephaim and an ally to Paige. Their friendship/something more is a key element that causes both of them to grow as people, to question the world around them.

Each book only gets better, as Shannon finds her feet in the series and the impressively intricate world she has built. So far my favourite book has been The Song Rising, where Paige is as strong as we've ever seen her, and there is only more to come as the world is set to expand even further in the next books as Paige sets off for Europe.

I actually can't wait till 2018 when the next book will be released. It's so genuinely upsetting to have to wait so long, knowing there are still so many to come. But I can be rational; I'll just keep rereading the ones I have until it's out.
